Richard Montgomery was an American general. He was born in Ireland in 1736. In 1772, he resigned his commission in the British service. He then settled in Dutchess County, New York representing it in the Continental Congress in 1775. As brigadier in the national army, he took Montreal, and was killed in the assault on Quebec in December, 1775. The body of the American general, Richard Montgomery was honorably interred by the Quebec garrison. Congress caused a memorial to be scheduled in St. Paul's church, New York. In1818 his remains were conveyed there from Quebec.
